Use the mouse to steer and click to put your shovel down, gathering a ball of dirt you can release the mouse to fire.

The shovel on the front of your vehicle is your shield, so make sure you try to deflect any shots directed at you. Gathering large dirt balls is less effective than using many small ones, and being able to maneuver is key in tight corners.
