All you have to do is left click to move around the galaxy, and collect all of the precious ores and minerals to gain experience/points to spend on upgrades. As you upgrade faster you can travel faster and further with every trip.

Collecting resources are fast as possible is key, and to do this you should upgrade the speed of your craft first, making it easier to find resources and harness them.
